The Scarf-Accented Knot

Our first look incorporates a narrow silk scarf for a more bohemian twist on the standard ballerina bun. To get the look, you'll need a narrow scarf (we cut a thrifted square scarf in half diagonally), volumizing spray, a backcombing brush or rattail comb, a hair elastic, and bobby pins.

1. First, flip your hair upside down and mist the roots with volumizing spray to give it some lift. Then, gather the hair into a high ponytail at the top of your head.
2. Use a rattail comb or backcombing brush to tease the hair near the elastic.
3. Coil the ponytail around its base to create a messy bun.
4. Secure the bun with bobby pins.
5. Twist the scarf until it's thin and rope-like. Starting at the back of your head, wrap the scarf around the base of the bun, overlapping the scarf ends in the front.
6. Work your way up as you wrap, making sure the layers stack on top of each other. Tie the scarf ends into a knot at the back of your head and tuck the loose ends under the base. And voila — you're done!

The Retro Roll 

This pretty, romantic 'do works just as well for a weekend brunch date as it does for a fancy event — even a wedding! To get it right, you'll need volumizing spray, a backcombing brush or rattail comb, and bobby pins.

1. Mist your hair with volumizing spray and lightly backcomb the length to give it some body.
2. Part hair down the middle. Starting just above your ear, begin twisting your hair inward, creating a roll. Incorporate all of your hair into the roll as you twist toward the nape of your neck.
3. Insert bobby pins into the roll to secure it, starting just behind your ear and finishing at the end of the roll. Repeat on the other side.
4. Gather up the remaining hair at the nape of your neck as if you're making a ponytail. Pull the length of your hair straight back, away from your head, and wrap the ends around your index finger. Fold the ends over your fingers to create a tube shape, and then continue rolling the hair toward the nape of your neck.
5. Roll the hair right up the base of your head and secure with bobby pins. And voila — you're done!

The Braid-Detail Chignon

For our final look, we wanted to create a slightly edgier bun — so our stylist incorporated baby braids into a messy bun for a warrior-chick-meets-princess vibe. To DIY, you'll need hair elastics (both standard ponytail elastics and smaller, clear versions), a backcombing brush or rattail comb, and bobby pins.
