5 Simple Steps Perfectly Tousled Beachy Waves

While its name implies that all you have to do is take a dip in the ocean, roll around in the sand, and poof! you've got perfectly tousled waves, beachy waves unfortunately requires a bit more work.

Step 1: Thoroughly wash your hair. If your hair is fine, use a volumizing shampoo like Shu Uemura Muroto Volume Amplifying Shampoo. Apply conditioner only to the ends and comb through. For enhanced volume and texture, skip conditioner. Cold rinse if you can handle it! This closes the cuticle so that the light reflects off of your hair, increasing shine.

Step 2: Comb through hair and apply a texturizing mousse, lotion, or gel. Bumble and bumble’s (Un) Dressing Crème and Shu Uemura Fiber Lift both work wonders. Apply the product starting from the ends and move upwards to avoid saturating the roots and preventing buildup, which only leads to greasy hair. Dhiran, also suggests using a protective product, like Shu Uemura’s Essence Absolue on the ends.

Step 3: Rough dry your hair, using just your blow dryer and fingers — or if your hair is a bit frizzier, use a round brush.

Step 4: Using a one-inch curling iron, work in vertical sections wrapping hair around the barrel. Hold for a few seconds and release. On the right side of your hair wound the curling iron clockwise and on the left side, wound counterclockwise. Spray your hair with a hairspray such as Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer after curling each section or spray everything at the end. Spraying after each section will result in tighter, longer-lasting curls. Remember to spray only after hair has cooled.

Step 5: When you're done curling, do a final spritz of hairspray again, and loosely rake through the curls, separating them with your fingers. Do not brush! Instead, use your fingers to create a more disheveled piece-y look.

For the final touch, add a flower crown.
