How to Shave the Bikini Area and Prevent Bumps and Irritation

Shaving your bikini area is the most delicate shaving job you need to perform. So, take your time, don’t rush and be gentle. That way you’ll prevent nicks and cuts as well as razor burns and ingrown hair. Learn how to shave your bikini area.

1. Try a Different Method

Ok, I know that I’m supposed to tell you how to shave your bikini area, but really – if there is any other method you would rather try – do it. I personally find shaving to be the most irritating method, so opting for another solution is a great idea.

If you can afford a laser hair removal down there, that’s the best choice. Waxing, if you can stand the pain, comes as a second choice and shaving cream as a third. Remember to try the shaving cream on a little part first, because it could give you irritation, especially in your pubic area where the skin is really sensitive. Give it 24 hours and if no irritation appears, you can safely use it.

If you’re still decisive to shave, here’s what you need to do.

2. Use Scissors First

If your pubic hair is longer than ¼ inch, it will be a very hard job to shave it. So, take a pair of scissors and carefully cut the hair to this length, or even shorter. Just be careful not to hurt yourself.

3. Take a Warm Shower

Warm water will make your hair softer and easier to shave. Always shave your bikini area in the shower. Give yourself a couple of minutes of warm shower before you start shaving the hair.

4. Exfoliate

An additional help for shaving your bikini area in the best possible way is to exfoliate the area before shaving. This will release any possible ingrown hair and make the shaving easier. Use only products you’ve tried before – you don’t want to be irritated by them.

5. Shaving Cream

Although a lot of girls do recommend the use of a shaving cream for your bikini area, I personally find it to be irritating. Normal soap is also not the best idea, because it could cause itchiness and mess with your normal Ph down there.

I use my intimate shower gel for this. However, if you don’t think it will work for you, try a shaving cream. Look for one for sensitive skin and again, always try on a small part of your bikini area first.

6. Open a New Razor

The razor you use for shaving your bikini area needs to be brand new. The skin there is really sensitive and you need a razor as sharp as possible in order to avoid red bumps and possible nicks.

7. How to Shave

A lot of people recommend shaving with the grain (in the direction of hair growth), especially for sensitive skin like the one in your bikini area. However, this practice has one big flaw – it doesn’t really shave the hair off.

If you can shave your hair going with the grain – that’s great! However, if you can’t, use long gentle strokes and rather shave side to side than against the grain. Use your free hand to tighten the skin in order to shave the hair as close to the skin as possible.

Don’t press the razor against your skin. If you have to apply pressure that means that your razor is dull and you need a new one.

8. Gently Dry

Once you’re done with shaving, take a clean soft towel and gently tap your skin to dry it. Do not rub the towel, because it can cause irritation.

9. Taking Care

I have tried many of those after shave creams and really none of them worked for me. Please, if you do know one that works recommend it for me in the comment section.

Don’t ever use men after-shave lotions, unless you want the whole neighborhood to hear you scream. I find baby powder to be the most effective thing. It soaks up the extra moisture down there and helps prevent that nasty itchiness, red bumps and pimples that are all caused by the moisture.
