The Complete Lipstick Guide for Redheads

We’re often asked what makeup will work if you have red hair. Honestly, since red hair is just so “in” right now, probably half of you at this point have dyed your hair red. We don’t exactly like to play by the rules — if you want to try a particular makeup color, try it! Obviously there are certain shade guidelines that you should keep in mind with this, but everyone by now should know the whole silver and gold jewelry trick (if silver looks better on you, you’re cool toned and vice versa).

With that said, once you know if you’ve got a “cool” or “warm” complexion, it’s still not the easiest thing to know if a shade goes well with your hair, makeup and everything else. So, we’ve pulled a few of our favorite redheads for guidance. Read on below for examples and inspiration!

Jayma Mays may be our favorite OCD guidance counselor on “Glee,” but she definitely likes to play outside the box when it comes to real life. She paired her white dress with a bright pink lip — not something that many redheads would be brave enough to do. This look works for her though since she was very subtle with the blush (just a slight, natural flush) and still made sure to play up her lashes. Another thing to note here is that Mays’ hair is a very light, coppery red shade so it doesn’t overpower the lip color.

Emma Stone, quite possibly one of the main reasons everyone is goes gaga over red hair, looks stunning with a wine-stained lip. She completed the look with a thick cat eye and a faint amount of blush as well. Again, her hair has an auburn tone to it so it compliments the deep lip color — although this deep color would be a good contrast to many redheads.

Bryce Dallas Howard showcases a great example of how to do coral with red hair. Her hair is actually extremely dark in this image, but the way she tried a coral lipstick and matched it with coral blush (and a pink dress) shows that it’s a gorgeous complement to deep auburn hair.

Christina Hendricks is never afraid to experiment with makeup, and she showcases one of the biggest fears for redheads: red lipstick. This shows that you can definitely try a bold and vibrant red even if your hair is just that. Do be careful of matching your lipstick color to your hair though!
